Los Angeles - May 16, 1996 - Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) new stand alone PC CD-ROM title MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, the highly anticipated "prequel" to last year's blockbuster hit MechWarrior 2, is poised to storm retail shelves this fall. Continuing the exploration of FASA's popular BattleTech Universe, this action-packed 3-D real-time game features ferocious fighting sequences with spectacular new special effects including smoke trails and explosions, ultra-realistic 3-D geometry, immersive music and rich color palettes. Mercenaries also will include a multi- player component, MercNet, that allows friends to compete head-to-head via a modem, or up to eight players to battle each other over a local area network.

Beginning in the year 3039 -- 18 years before the action of MechWarrior 2 -- Mercenaries plunges players into a fierce, hostile world where the houses of the Inner Sphere are warring with each other, as well as battling the invading Clans. As Inner Sphere MechWarriors, who can be betrayed by patrons or allies, players are combat-hardened pilots for whom loyalty and honor are meaningless in their quest for money, power and fame.

Featuring 30 new 'Mechs and missions, MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries will allow players to delve into the dark and gritty world of combat for hire. Players will be responsible for resource management as they earn money for successfully completing missions and must pay for such items as new 'Mechs, ammunition, technician services and repairs.

If they have enough Comstar Bill (C-Bills), players can also hire up to two additional pilots to assist them in completing mission objectives. Ultimately, players will work to acquire quantities of C-Bills and build an elite Mercenary squad in an effort to prepare for the ultimate epic war, the Battle of Tukayyid.

MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries will include a non-linear game play feature that will allow each mission to have a variety of possible outcomes depending on players' performances. Delivering the most ferocious 'Mech fighting to date, the game will feature dynamic progression so that damage sustained in one battle will carry over into subsequent missions. In this rough world where commerce is king, players will have the option of salvaging 'Mech parts from the battlefield should they need economical replacement hardware.

Designed for Windows 95 and MS-DOS with special Pentium enhancements, Mercenaries will feature a cinematic, full-screen video introduction in addition to other video sequences that will brief players on their missions, provide story transitions and deliver the ultimate reward for being a profitable Mercenary. Players conduct their mercenary missions and select combat options by means of six different screen interfaces: the starport, Mercenary office, 'Mech Bay, 'Mech Factory, Battle simulator and Arms Dealer.

MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries builds on Activision's successful MechWarrior franchise. MechWarrior 2 for Windows 95 which was one of the first games to have multi-player capability. Also that month Activision released MechWarrior 2 Expansion Pack: Ghost Bear's Legacy which provided players an additional Clan and more than a dozen new missions.
